I have always been an HP fan - over 30 years. My recent experience with two brand new HP 9135e's had me pulling my hair out with over 20 hours over three days with HP Tech support - 5 techs, 2 supervisors and 1 HP Engineer. The managed to permanently damage both machines. Long story short - I decided to try this Epson ET5850. #1. Setup was a breeze compared to the new HPs - less than 5 min. Printing is very fast and I like the three trays. I use this for my online business - one tray plain paper, the second half-sheet shipping labels. I am not sure what I will use the rear tray for yet. I like how the paper feed tray comes out automatically when starting a print job. After installing I did discover it conflicted with my HP flatbed scanner software, but it was an easy fix. My only complaint has always been with Epson printers vs HP and that is print quality. I thought by now Epson would have had that corrected. Print quality meaning the darkness and depth of colors that HP printers show. I wasn't a deal breaker even for a $700 printer, as HP tech support had me tied up in knots with trying to run my business and no printers. Yes, I tried tweaking the print quality, but really found no positive results in doing so. This is my first Eco Tank so I will be watching how this new tech plays out. Overall it is extremely simple filling the ink. Epson gives you two sets of ink bottles which was nice as they run about $120 for a set through most anyone. One other inconvenient thing is Epson Tech Support is only available, both phone and chat, during the day whereas HP (bozos) are available 24/7. It remains to be seen how Epson tech support quality is. I am not getting my hopes up. As a retired IT Mgr of 35 years, I have set up thousands of PC's and printers. I have two business offices/computer setups in both my home offices. I am usually on the bleeding edge of new tech and will invest in quality and ease every time if it makes my business life easier, higher quality and faster. And it feels great to be cartridge-free. Print quality is excellent to say the least, with highly legible text that's appropriate for most businesses and personal use. Also, its color photo quality printing is equal &/or superior to laser jet printers. This printer is also well-documented with a user manual that's available as PDF online. This user manual is written in correct and plain language....although I would still prefer a paper owners manual. Scanning was perfect as well. I gave these features a quick test with a high resolution image. Without a microscope the original and copy are indistinguishable from one another.\r\n \r\n  I'm very happy with this printer. I feel like it will last for quite a while without needing to be refilled. \r\n\r\nSetting up the printer initially was very easy. It connected to my Wi-Fi network quickly and easily. The software was easily available to download online, and works well with my Windows 10 system. After install, it did an automatic update to the latest version of the software. I like the touchscreen control panel; it’s easy to use an intuitive. I do wish it would stay on longer without going into sleep mode. There may be a setting to change this but I have not figured it out yet. It only stays “awake” for about a minute. I like that there are two paper trays, which make it easier to print more pages. The print output tray comes out automatically when you print of copy, and it effectively keeps the papers from falling out and getting mixed up. I like that you can set up an email address for this printer, and if you send it an email with a file, it will automatically print the file. Unfortunately, it’s hard to adjust the size of the print of the file, so if you send it a picture, it will print out the full size of the page. \r\n\r\nPrinting from my computer and my smartphone is very easy. Having used the scanning function a few times, I am quite disappointed. First of all, you can’t change the name of the file before scanning. You have to wait until after it scans and saves it to the computer, then change it. This makes it somewhat hard for me to find the file on my computer since it saves it with just a number (the date of scan). Scanning multiple pages with the document feeder doesn’t work at all. It will not pull in one page at a time. I could not get this function to work right no matter how many times I tried. It always pulled in 2-3 pages at a time when I had multiple pages stacked on the document feeder. \r\n\r\nThe quality of the print is very good for an inkjet printer. The color is bright and bold and the resolution is fairly clear. It’s obviously not as good as a laser printer, but it’s good for an inkjet. I would not say this gives a “print shop quality” print though. In addition, it prints pages a lot faster than a typical inkjet printer. Basically the main benefits of this product are that is saves money on ink and has less waste than typical inkjet printers. It prints in bold color and prints quickly. It is a little tricky getting out of the box due to its weight, definitely a two-person job as indicated in the printed setup instructions. There is a TON of blue packing tape on the printer (for good reason) which took a thorough inspection to make sure I had removed all of it prior to proceeding to the initial setup. The unit is fairly large in size compared to standard home printers, so make sure you have a solid and large enough surface/table to set the printer on. Overall it is very sturdy and well built. Even though it is made of plastic, it does not feel flimsy or like something that would easily break. It really does feel like a good quality office product.\r\nFollowing the included instructions provided for an easy setup. There are two bottles of each color ink included (and it takes nearly all of it) and the process of filling and priming the printer is simple. The keyed color bottles prevent accidental mix-up of colors while filling and the priming process is automatic. I installed the printer via wired ethernet but the process seems easy whether wired or wi-fi. \r\nThe eco-tanks are really nice as the ink supply seems almost unending and there is no print head alignment required like most other printers. I have owned other Epson EcoTank printers in the past and rarely need to buy replacement ink. The print quality of the ET-5880 is excellent. It prints out a full color document quickly and surprisingly quiet compared to other printers. The text and graphics are sharp and clear. With regard to printing photographs, I am actually pleasantly surprised. Having used various non-photo printers in the past, the ET-5880 printed a good quality full-page photo on plain paper and great quality photo on premium photo paper. The quality still does not equal a true photo-printer with special photo-specific ink colors, but for a three color printer, I am impressed.\r\nThe 3 paper sources of the printer (2 trays and 1 rear feed) work well. The trays hold a decent supply of paper, including legal, and the rear feed is nice for quick use specialty paper (photo, card, envelope, etc..). Unlike past models, it is easy to change the paper size mid-print if the source setting was incorrect.
