I had not previously used a monitor with this many features, but found it very easy to use the basic functions while running. The GPS recorded very accurate measurements during each run and provided an excellent upload capability to allow me to analyze each workout on the computer and track progress. One very nice feature of the application is to be able to set goals and then track against progress. My first targets were set incorrectly as the app is not exactly clear what the goal is - – thought I was setting a goal of x miles per run when it actually set the total of all workouts in a period of time to x miles. I really like that the SF-710 allows you to select different workout modes – walking, running, biking. Primary controls for start/stop (including pause), lap time and backlight are easy to control and not easily bumped. The very distinct button push feel made it very easy to know when I had actually pushed the button. The 10 second backlight was excellent to see the dial during night time runs. It was bright enough to easily read the face of the watch and long enough to see the details. Initial Set-up of the watch was very easy to do. I was a little disappointed in the time it took to lock onto the GPS signal at the beginning of the workout. Because you need to be outside for the GPS lock to occur, and most of my runs were at night in the cold, it took longer to start the workout than I would have liked. I expected the GPS signal to lock much quicker. Once the GPS signal was locked, the SF-710 never lost the signal. Once returning back inside, it was easy to turn the GPS mode off so that the battery would not drain trying to lock the GPS signal. This is a very stylish looking exercise monitor/tracker which is suitable to wear all day long. The band is very comfortable to wear during work as well as during exercise. The full unit cleans up very nicely with a damp cloth. The ability to review workouts on the unit (as well as in the computer app) allows for realtime review of the workout, or a historical review of previous workouts. I was not able to find the ability to log free-text comments about the workout in the Runsense View App, which would have been very nice to be able to do. The App does however, allow you to see the route traveled against a map background, which is great to be able to compare workouts. Overall, I am very pleased with the performance, functionality and utility of this unit. It doesn't do all that a top-end watch like the Garmin 920 does (e.g., support for swimming, talking to bike power meters, uploading workouts onto the watch) , but it costs less than half of what that watch costs as well. By default it goes into sleep mode, waking up when moved, and gets a GPS satellite lock in no more than 30 seconds even from an unfamiliar location, so it's a good choice for just strapping it on and going for a run.\r\n\r\n  The initial unboxing was OK – the battery charging went from 0% to 60% in one hour, and was at 100% in less than 2 hours. The initial device setup was unremarkable, but as it was pouring rain on Saturday night, I declined to step outside for long enough to get a GPS signal to set the time. When I did this, it was not correct for daylight savings time, an obvious error to be fixed. Pairing the watch with the iphone app worked successfully the first time.  The GPS time to first fix was actually quite good – a bit over 30 seconds for a first fix in my backyard. Re-acquiring satellites in my front yard a few minutes later prior to a run was also quite fast – less than 10 seconds.  The 30 minute run I did showed a systematic 0.02 miles per mile difference as compared with my Garmin 920, but that's close enough to not be a concern, and vastly better than the accuracy I've seen out of the box with the other watches I've tested (Bia and Leikr). I wore my Garmin HR chest strap; being able to work with accessories like this that I already own would have been a nice plus, but I haven't found a way yet to get this to work.  I'm not a fan of round faces on GPS watches, as I think you lose valuable screen space for showing data, which is the whole point of wearing one. I've been wearing this sort of watch for at least 11 years and both workouts and races have stabilized on 4 data fields. For workouts, they are lap time, lap pace, lap distance, and heart rate. For races, they are lap pace (lap = 1 mile), total distance, total time, and heart rate. I'll have to dig into the manual to see how much control I have over data fields and screen layout; having to give up one of these fields, without some additional benefit somewhere else, would be a major disadvantage.  My default habit for running workouts and pure running races (i.e., not triathlons) is to run with my phone and on this first run I did this, but after it was over I discovered that despite not being more than a short distance apart the watch and app on the phone had lost the connection, and I have not been able to reestablish it to get the data off the watch and uploaded.  Installing the Windows app, uploading data through that was trouble-free. The displayed data from the workout (pace and map) looked ok \r\n\r\n I then went for a second run with the watch on Tuesday. Battery level after the first run took a real hit, down to 60%; some was the run, some was the watch being constantly woken up whenever it was moved. At least it charges quickly. Time to get a GPS lock in another new location was still quick at 30 seconds, impressively faster than my 920 (44 seconds) even though the 920 had seen this location many times before. This run was almost all under dense tree cover. I saw significantly more pace variation than when running under open sky, and distance was off by roughly 0.08 miles per mile run, not a good sign. Setup was relatively easy, display was easy to read and the backlight works well. The watch locked on to GPS quickly, even indoors. Downloaded the iOS Epson Run Connect App and that's where my experience went downhill, the app is absolutely horrid, I could not make sense of any of the options, for example Upload Workout Data versus Upload Activity Data. View workout data is nothing more than a website portal that really is not that well designed. (While I marked yes I would recommend to a friend that should be more of a maybe, based on their needs)\r\n\r\nThe Pros: \r\n- It picks up sattelites very quickly, if I press the button as I'm walking out the door 9 times out of 10 its picked up multiple sattelites before I step off the front porch. In the same vein, its sensitive because I can usually get satellite lock while I'm still in my house. \r\n- Highly accurate, looking at the map after I upload my runs or walks it is accurate enough to tell what side of the street I was on. Also, it gets its time from sattelite which is nice since I don't have to guess if I set the time right. \r\n- Charger is way better than any fitness band I've used, I've read some people hate it because its big and not convenient for travel, honestly I don't think its that big, and the watch pops in with a very positive click feeling, I don't have to fiddle with it or guess if it is charging, it just works, which is nice after my fitness band that uses a charging cable that connects magnetically. \r\n- Battery life, this was actually a very nice surprise, I was skeptical when it said 30 hours because there is no way i'm going to charge a watch every day, but no, the 30 hours is actual GPS use time, Its been almost a week since I last charged this, and using gps for a minimum of an hour a day, it still shows 2 out of 3 bars in the battery indicator. \r\n- Backlight, granted I haven't worn a watch regularly in more than a decade, but back when I did the best option for lighting a watch was that greenish indiglo which I was never a fan of, this just backlights the lcd with white light, nice and easy to read in the dark. \r\n- Durable, this thing takes a licking and keeps ticking, I've managed to whack it against walls, door frames, desks, etc. it barely has a scratch and still remains impervious to water. \r\nCons:\r\n- Doesn't make for a very good watch, sure it shows the time, and yes it is very accurate timewise, but it doesn't allow you to set a time based alarm, seems like a pretty basic feature to me, really annoyed me. \r\n- Bluetooth is very basic, while it allows you to upload your run data without having to plug it in to a computer, its annoying in that you have to actually hold the lap button for a second or so to tell the watch to turn on bluetooth communication, and you can only upload 1 run at a time. No getting notifications on your wrist either, I don't expect a full on smart watch, but it would be nice if it at least vibrated on my wrist if there was a new text or phone call, or even remind me of events in my calendar. \r\n- Waypoints, yes you can set location based waypoints, but you can't see direction or distance to those waypoints until you are more or less standing right on them, I was hoping to be able to use it to find my way back to my car in a parking lot, or enter gps coordinates of geocaches and then just have them on my wrist ready to go at all times, the only purpose I can see for waypoints as they stand is if you have a set route and you want the watch to notify you as you reach certain marks along the path, you aren't going to be using this for navigation. \r\n- No built in HR monitor, ok yes I'm being a bit nitpicky here, and yes I know the 810 has built in hr, but considering my other fitness band that retails for what this is currently on sale for has built in HR monitor I feel like Epson would have done better to standardize on the same hardware for the 710 and 810 and make the differentiation in software. \r\n- Buttons: the start/stop button that us used for initiating the GPS is either in a bad location or is way too easy to actuate, as I'm walking around I will frequently activate it inadvertantly just putting my hands in my pockets or whatever, I'd much rather have a long press to turn on gps, but this isn't really a deal breaker, just a personal annoyance for me.\r\n- Software, the android app is decent but is annoying in its only being able to upload one run at a time. The positives about this devise are it's very easy to use and has a nice backlight to read the numbers at night and it holds a charge long enough to complete a 100 mile trail run without having to use multiple devises. It's SIMPLE, no frills and well worth the money. If you are a multiple tri- athlete, this devise is probably not for you as it doesn't have the capability of changing sports, or sustaining underwater swimming miles. For the LONG distance ultra marathoner, this devise is a great find. It's small and light and best of all, it can keep track of your miles and pace for up to 30 hours.
