Ink smears when I print envelopes. What should I do?

  • Try the following:
    • Turn on the Thick paper and envelopes setting in the printer driver. To select this setting in Windows, click the Maintenance tab in the printer driver, click Printer and Option Information, and select Thick paper and envelopes. To select this setting in Mac OS X, see your product's User's Guide for instructions.

      Note:
Make sure to turn this setting off when not printing on thick paper or envelopes.
    • If your product comes with a sheet feeder, make sure to load the envelope with the flap closed, against the right side and beneath the tab. Load it printable side up and flap edge left. Then slide the edge guide to the edge of the envelope, but not too tightly.

(Your product's sheet feeder may look different from the above image.)

      Tip:
Press each envelope flat before loading it or load one envelope at a time.
    • If your product comes with a paper tray, make sure to load the envelope in the main tray with the flap facing up and on the left side. Then slide the edge guides to the edges of the envelope, but not too tightly.

(Your product's paper tray may look different from the above image.)

      Tip:
Press each envelope flat before loading it or load one envelope at a time.

After lowering the photo tray, slide it forward and make sure the envelopes are not riding up the back of the paper cassette. Then slide the photo tray all the way back.
